What causes an excessive hair loss?

When you wake up in the morning and see hair on your pillow or when you take a shower and see all that hair in the sieve you know you have a hair loss problem and this, as we all know, is a frustrating situation.

First of all, I think we have to stay calm about it and not be in panic immediately. There are several aspects that may be causing this, and it’s important to know about them in order to treat them accurately. Let me talk about the most common causes that I found surfing the internet.

A lot of things may cause an excessive hair loss. For example, more or less, three or four months after having a mayor surgery you may suddenly loose a considerable amount of hair. This is usually related to the stress caused by the surgery (or illness) and it’s just temporal.

Hormonal issues may cause loss of hair too. If your thyroid gland is too active, or if it’s less active than normal you can also loose hair. This type of hair loss can be battled by treating the thyroid gland first.

In some cases, certain medicines are responsible for this, but it should stop when stop taking the medicine. So, if you notice that you started loosing hair when you started your medication then you should wait till your treatment is completed before looking for specialized treatments.

Another common cause for hair loss is when there’s an unbalance between male and female hormones (androgens and estrogens). Correcting this hormonal unbalance may stop the loss of hair.

The loss of hair may also occur as a part of an illness such as lupus or diabetes. In such illnesses loosing hair may be an early symptom of them, that’s why it’s important to determine what is causing this problem in order to do something accurately about it before it’s too late.

Finally, and the most common cause, is related to heritance. If there’s large historical hair loss problem in your family it’s highly probable you’re having this problem too. However, even in these cases, there are helpful treatments on the market that can help you to prevent losing your hair, especially if you treat yourself in your early years (I’ll talk about them on the following posts).

Whatever the cause is for your hair loss problem, it is always recommended to visit a doctor before thinking about trying any home remedy. Dermatologists are specialized people that accurately can identify the cause (s) of your problem and give you the best treatment for your specific case.
